INN Members Finalists in Online Journalism Awards

Encino, Calif., Aug. 12, 2015 — Ten members of the Institute for Nonprofit News collectively earned 22 finalist nods for Online Journalism Awards from the Online News Association.

The Center for Public Integrity led the way with seven projects named finalists, including one for public service and two for data journalism. The Center for Investigative Reporting/Reveal (four finalists), The Connecticut Mirror, inewsource, Investigative Reporting Workshop, The Lens, MinnPost, Mother Jones (two finalists), ProPublica (three finalists), and the Texas Tribune (four finalists), also are up for awards.

The award nominations, announced this week, show that nonprofit newsrooms are making a broad impact across the country, said Denise Malan, interim executive director and CEO of the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN).

"Our members are leaders in digital innovation and in reporting news that matters most to their communities, news you cannot get anywhere else," Malan said. "We are proud, but not surprised, to see such a great showing in the Online Journalism Awards."

The finalist nominations also show that many INN members are not only digital innovators, but also often collaborate with each other and with other media partners. The Center for Public Integrity and Reveal Radio received a nomination together, as did ProPublica and The Lens, along with several other collaborations.

"This recognition of INN members achievements demonstrates the deep value of their work for a free and democratic society," said Brant Houston, chair of the INN board. "This is why it is so important for INN and its supporters to continue to find ways to sustain and grow these organizations through successful business models and the sharing of resources and knowledge."
