SUMMARY:Gaining Search Traffic with Guides\, Explainers and Evergreen Stories
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This event is for INN members only.\nEvergreen content is a critical part of a news organization’s strategy for doing well on search\, but it often gets overlooked. Stories that explain how local ordinances get passed or what “qualified immunity” means are incredibly valuable to readers trying to understand the news\, and they establish the organization as experts and drive traffic over time. \nDuring this webinar\, search engine optimization experts from the Globe and Mail\, the Athletic and Orbit Media will work through how to identify evergreen topics\, set stories up to perform well on search and maintain topics over time to keep consistent traffic. \nAbout the speakers\nJessie Wilms is the audience and SEO editor at the Globe & Mail. She is also a co-founder of the WTF is SEO? newsletter on search strategies for news publishers and an instructor at Centennial College in Toronto. \nShelby Blackley is the newsroom SEO editor at the Athletic. She is a co-founder of WTF is SEO? and was previously the SEO manager for Mashable and audience engagement editor at the Globe and Mail. \nAndy Crestodina is a co-founder and chief marketing officer of Orbit Media\, a design and digital marketing firm based in Chicago. He is a guest lecturer at Northwestern and Loyola universities and author of “Content Chemistry: The Illustrated Handbook for Content Marketing.”

SUMMARY:INN + PACEs: Trauma Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This event is for INN members only.\nThe Institute for Nonprofit News and PACEs Connection are co-sponsoring a series of four one- and 1.5-hour workshops for journalists about the science of positive and adverse childhood experiences and the policies and practices of trauma-informed care. When journalists learn about the science behind trauma\, they ask better questions\, produce more informed and useful stories for their communities\, and have a better understanding of themselves in their interactions with the people they interview\, their colleagues and their supervisors. This workshop is NOT to learn about how to report on the science of trauma itself; it’s about how to incorporate this knowledge in your reporting\, your news organization and your personal life. \nYou can register for all four sessions here. \nAbout the speaker \nJane Ellen Stevens is founder and publisher of PACEs Connection\, comprising the social network PACEsConnection.com and the news site ACEsTooHigh.com. The sites focus on the science of positive and adverse childhood experiences (PACES)\, and how people are implementing health-centered\, resilience-building practices based on that science. The network’s supporters include the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, The California Endowment\, Genentech\, St. David’s Foundation\, the Lisa & John Pritzker Family Fund\, and the George Sarlo Foundation. Stevens has been a health\, science and technology journalist for more than 35 years. Her articles have appeared in the Boston Globe\, the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, the Los Angeles Times and National Geographic. She began reporting about the CDC-Kaiser Permanente ACE Study and the other four parts of ACEs science in 2005. She has lived and worked in Kenya and Indonesia\, and has been to Antarctica — in the winter — three times on reporting fellowships. \nThe workshops will take place Wednesdays at 4 p.m. ET.  Topics and dates for each of the workshops: \nWorkshop #1—The science of trauma\, Jan. 11\nWorkshop #2—Historical trauma\, Jan. 25\nWorkshop #3—How can you apply PACEs science in your work?\, Feb. 8\nWorkshop #4—Integrating crime reporting into a health beat. Prep: crime data in your community.\, Feb. 22
