SUMMARY:INN + PACEs: Trauma Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This event is for INN members only.\nThe Institute for Nonprofit News and PACEs Connection are co-sponsoring a series of four one- and 1.5-hour workshops for journalists about the science of positive and adverse childhood experiences and the policies and practices of trauma-informed care. When journalists learn about the science behind trauma\, they ask better questions\, produce more informed and useful stories for their communities\, and have a better understanding of themselves in their interactions with the people they interview\, their colleagues and their supervisors. This workshop is NOT to learn about how to report on the science of trauma itself; it’s about how to incorporate this knowledge in your reporting\, your news organization and your personal life. \nYou can register for all four sessions here. \nAbout the speaker \nJane Ellen Stevens is founder and publisher of PACEs Connection\, comprising the social network PACEsConnection.com and the news site ACEsTooHigh.com. The sites focus on the science of positive and adverse childhood experiences (PACES)\, and how people are implementing health-centered\, resilience-building practices based on that science. The network’s supporters include the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, The California Endowment\, Genentech\, St. David’s Foundation\, the Lisa & John Pritzker Family Fund\, and the George Sarlo Foundation. Stevens has been a health\, science and technology journalist for more than 35 years. Her articles have appeared in the Boston Globe\, the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, the Los Angeles Times and National Geographic. She began reporting about the CDC-Kaiser Permanente ACE Study and the other four parts of ACEs science in 2005. She has lived and worked in Kenya and Indonesia\, and has been to Antarctica — in the winter — three times on reporting fellowships. \nThe workshops will take place Wednesdays at 4 p.m. ET.  Topics and dates for each of the workshops: \nWorkshop #1—The science of trauma\, Jan. 11\nWorkshop #2—Historical trauma\, Jan. 25\nWorkshop #3—How can you apply PACEs science in your work?\, Feb. 8\nWorkshop #4—Integrating crime reporting into a health beat. Prep: crime data in your community.\, Feb. 22

SUMMARY:Leadership Learning Series: Build Collaborative Performance Plans
DESCRIPTION:Learn how Resolve Philly is shaking up performance planning to make it more transparent and inclusive by co-creating plans with staff and providing consistent and substantive feedback. Resolve’s Co-Executive Directors Cassie Haynes and Jean Friedman-Rudovsky share how and why they created this new approach and practical information on how you can\, too. This program is part of INN’s 2023 member-to-member webinar series on innovative\, people-centered leadership approaches to growing talent within member organizations. These sessions are designed to make big concepts practical and concrete so that members can implement them in their own organizations. \nAbout the speakers\nCassie Haynes has been a leader in social innovation and business strategy since 2012\, holding executive leadership positions with the City of Philadelphia and in startups at the intersection of the health and fitness industries. In a past life\, she was Executive Director of the global governing body of flat track roller derby and had a brief tenure as a lawyer with a mid-sized Philadelphia law firm. She co-founded Resolve Philly alongside Jean Friedman-Rudovsky in 2018\, frustrated by Philadelphia’s stagnant social mobility and intrigued by the role that journalism could play in driving equitable solutions to something as deep and systemic as racism and poverty in Philadelphia. In the years since\, Resolve’s portfolio of work has grown and Cassie has become a national speaker and thought leader on diversity and belonging in newsrooms\, shared leadership\, and building equitable organizational structures. She has appeared on panels and hosted discussions with the National Press Club Journalism Institute\, Knight Foundation\, Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia\, and a range of other institutions. She’s a Boston Marathoner\, holds powerlifting records in two states\, and is currently writing her first book. \nJean Friedman-Rudovsky is a freelance investigative journalist based in Philadelphia. She is a VICE Magazine contributing editor and her work has appeared in TIME\, The New York Times\, SCIENCE\, Marie Claire\, Cosmopolitan\, and Foreign Policy among others. Jean is a recipient of the Aronson Award for social justice journalism and the SPJ Green Eye-shade award for Best Consumer Reporting\, she has reported from five continents and is currently writing a book about women’s resistance across the globe. She is also the Philadelphia coordinator of the Solutions Journalism Network.
