The Arizona Center for Investigative Reporting, a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization based in Phoenix, Arizona, is seeking an Executive Director and Editor.

Responsibilities

As AZCIR’s Executive Director and Editor, the candidate will oversee the nonprofit’s operations and lead investigative projects on a wide range of subjects. The director will focus on big-picture accountability journalism with an investigative focus while leading fundraising efforts and business operations. An emphasis will be placed on distinctive, data-driven projects. The candidate will report to AZCIR’s Board of Directors and oversee the Center’s staff, contributing reporters, photographers, interns and videographers.

We are seeking a creative, aggressive self-starter with demonstrated excellence in investigative reporting. The director is expected to work with staff to develop sources, originate story ideas and present complex issues in a clear and engaging way. Strong news judgment is critical, along with working efficiently and accurately while juggling longer-term projects.

The successful candidate must not only establish an editorial direction that is consistent with AZCIR’s mission of statewide investigative reporting, but have the entrepreneurial skills and vision to oversee its overall operation. The director must cultivate relationships with the community, business and civic leaders, funders and donors, and continue to build a strong board of directors. A commitment to journalistic and business model experimentation is key, particularly with a focus on new and emerging opportunities with technology.

The successful candidate is expected to produce investigative stories that resonate both statewide and nationally, focusing on topics such as immigration, the border, politics, campaign finance and criminal justice. The director should also be nimble in developing investigative angles off breaking news events that happen in Arizona such as immigration.

The director should also aggressively pursue fundraising and partnership opportunities with non-profits and other newsrooms.

Strong ethical standards are required. In all endeavors, AZCIR is nonpartisan and does not engage in any form of political advocacy. The same is true for decisions made between and with partner newsrooms, contributing reporters and all AZCIR staff.

Organization Background

The Arizona Center for Investigative Reporting has operated for nearly six years as the state’s only nonprofit newsroom dedicated to statewide investigative and accountability reporting. It has evolved from a one-person operation to a much sought-after partner in the state’s media landscape and a hub for data-driven accountability journalism.

Through its original and collaborative reporting, data acquisition and sharing, and efforts to improve public access to information, AZCIR produces investigative journalism to better inform Arizona communities. The Center publishes on AZCIR.org and elsewhere on the Web, television and radio, and in newspapers through partnerships with newsrooms in Arizona and throughout the U.S.

The Center was co-founded in 2012 by Brandon Quester, current board member and interim director, until this position is filled. In addition to Quester, the Center’s board includes Paula Casey, executive director of the Arizona Newspapers Association, Adam Goodman, president of Goodmans Interior Structures, and Josh Hoffner, news editor for national beats at the Associated Press.

AZCIR receives funding from individuals and foundations and derives revenue from service-based data analysis, collaborative work with partner newsrooms and trainings.
