Website bettergov Better Government Association

The Better Government Association, a 95-year-old nonprofit newsroom based in Chicago, is seeking an experienced, aggressive investigative reporter with a proven ability to quickly develop sources, cut through entrenched, secretive bureaucracies and break news in a competitive media market.

You’d join a team of nearly a dozen reporters and editors in Chicago and Washington, D.C., with extensive newspaper experience exposing corruption and explaining systemic abuse of taxpayer dollars. We strive to set news agendas and aren’t afraid to devote months reporting a story. Some of our recent efforts include investigations into how residents in Chicago public housing are harmed by mismanaged elevators in their buildings, widespread problems with police accountability and failed oversight at nuclear power plants.

The BGA is one of the nation’s oldest nonprofit news organizations with a storied history. Perhaps its most famous effort was in the 1970s when its reporters went undercover with its news partners at the Chicago Sun-Times to own a bar, the Mirage Tavern, to expose bribe-taking by city inspectors.

The BGA has evolved since then. In the past year, we won an array of awards, including three national prizes for the nuclear power story, an investigation into the manipulation of graduation data at Chicago city colleges by Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration and our legal and journalistic efforts that forced Emanuel to release government communications from his personal email accounts.

A reporter with strong investigative intuition, facility with FOIA, an ability to develop data and other concrete evidence to prove a story, dogged pursuit of sources, incisive interviewing skills, strong writing and an urgency to publish: These are the traits that will lead to success as a reporter at the BGA.

The job is based in Chicago. Salary and benefits are competitive.

Please send an email with the subject line “Investigative Reporter Opening” to John Chase, Director of Investigations at BGA_Investigations@bettergov.org. Provide a resume, cover letter and links to at least three but no more than five clips.
