Youth Journalism Instructor

City Limits, an award-winning nonprofit newsroom that has covered New York City since 1976, is seeking an experienced reporter to run our youth journalism training program for the summer of 2021.

This position will be charged with instructing a group of 20 participants in the City Limits Accountability Reporting Initiative for Youth (CLARIFY), a paid internship program for NYC high school students who learn and apply the skills of investigative journalism as they report on issues affecting their own neighborhoods. The summer 2021 program will run for four weeks in July, for approximately 20 hours per week, Mondays through Thursdays. Instruction will take place remotely. While this is a time-limited position, there will be the option for the right candidate to continue running the program for the fall 2021 semester.


Helping City Limits’ staff with the recruitment and application process; handling communication with program applicants and participants
Planning for and teaching classes on a variety of reporting and news writing lessons including research, interviewing, media ethics, media literacy, story structure, photojournalism, accessing public records and more
Working with interns to produce articles for a weekly newsletter; overseeing and assisting in the reporting and writing process and editing their work for final publication
Managing day-to-day program operations, including payment of interns’ stipends, retaining payment records and track program metrics
Planning (remote) visits from journalists/guest speakers


Excellent reporting, writing and editing skills; familiarity with investigative journalism preferred
Interest and enthusiasm for working with young writers
Education experience a plus
Familiarity with CMS and online publishing platforms
