Status: Part-time, 20 hours/week, potential for growth

Starting Pay: $32,500 at half-time + flexibility + vacation

InvestigateWest, a nonprofit investigative newsroom in Seattle covering the Pacific Northwest, is looking for an organized, detail-oriented Deputy Editor for story development, newsroom management, and editing.

We produce 3-5 deep dive investigative/explanatory stories each month. You will work with our Executive Editor and a team of freelance reporters, photographers, and visual artists to produce in-depth story packages that both adhere to our award-winning reporting standards, and are forward-thinking in terms of design and execution in a digital newsroom. Coverage this year includes the Washington Legislature, the Washington foster care system and other deep dive investigative and explanatory stories that will arise over the course of 2021.

Successful candidates will have experience with journalistic writing and editing and story development for a digital newsroom, be interested in collaboration with other local media outlets, and have keen interest in the changing journalism landscape, with excitement for the opportunities ahead. One of our primary intentions is to engage local communities to ensure we are meeting a range of information needs and providing the journalism in service of a more just and equitable world. You will work with our Senior Engagement Officer to ensure that we are fostering ties between reporters and community members, listening to the communities we serve, and creating plans to act on ideas from those communities.

Responsibilities

·      Work constructively with reporters to develop stories

·      Conceptual editing and Line-edit stories

·      Work closely with the Executive Editor

·      Assist the Executive Editor with scheduling of stories, management of reporters, and other logistics/operations matters

·      Work on stories as a reporter as time permits and circumstances dictate

·      Familiarity with: working with/mentoring interns, maintaining editorial calendars, working with CMS back end (we use Monday.com, Trello, and Microsoft Suite, as well as Google docs)
