PublicSource.org, a nonprofit online newsroom in Pittsburgh, is seeking candidates for an Emerging Photojournalist Fellowship. This opportunity will be a two-year fellowship for early-career photojournalists who want to tell powerful visual stories on critical issues in the Pittsburgh region.
Diverse candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
At PublicSource, we focus on stories with powerful narratives to explain complex issues in the areas of education, health, the environment, community development, local government and social justice. And as an online news organization, we believe strong visuals are essential to that storytelling.
We are local, and we believe in journalism as a public service. We are a small, award-winning team. In 2016 and 2017, we were named finalists in an international contest recognizing overall excellence in online journalism. In 2018, we won 13 awards in regional and state competitions.
We’re looking for candidates with:
*1 to 3 years of professional experience who can make compelling photos on both daily assignments and long-term projects.
*Candidates should be able to not only work independently when necessary but also thrive in a collaborative environment.
*Strong time management and scheduling skills are essential, as not every assignment will be during normal hours.
*We’re also looking for someone who can assist in coordinating our overall visuals coverage with other staff and our network of freelancers.
*An interest or experience in videography is a plus, as is the ability to conceptualize how to capture the audience’s attention on social media with different ways to present the visuals, like Instagram stories, Facebook galleries and more.
*Lastly, candidates should have an interest in learning new skills — whether that’s bolstering their abilities in video and audio or learning how to submit records requests and analyzing data.
Are you interested? Applicants should send a cover letter, resume and online portfolio to firstname.lastname@example.org by Sept. 2.
