The San Antonio Report is a nonprofit, nonpartisan digital news organization. Because we are member-supported, our quality, in-depth journalism is available at no cost to everyone in the city and beyond; we don’t have a paywall that restricts our content. We publish without fear or favor and without any obligation to outside owners or interests. We cover all that is best about the city: its personalities, neighborhoods, businesses, culture, cuisine, arts and entertainment. We tackle its problems and challenges, too, and spotlight innovative solutions, many to be found in other cities competing for the next generation of talented workers and their families. The San Antonio Report began in 2012 as the Rivard Report, a blog created by a husband-and-wife team that has grown into a thriving online news enterprise with a staff of 22 talented, passionate journalists and nonprofit professionals. Our work, which includes a year-round calendar of civic engagement events, is all about San Antonio and the surrounding communities.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The San Antonio Report’s business development and advertising manager is responsible for managing, maintaining and continuing to improve on the San Antonio Report’s existing advertising program as well as fostering and growing strategic partnerships with local organizations for the purpose of strengthening and growing the San Antonio Report’s business membership program. The business development & advertising manager must demonstrate a commitment to growing the San Antonio Report’s existing advertising and business membership programs to contribute to the overall growth of the San Antonio Report. The San Antonio Report’s business team is committed to generating financial support for our newsroom to provide the city’s engaged citizens with a credible source of news, information and commentary. This position works closely with other members of the San Antonio Report’s business team and reports to the Chief Operating Officer. 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

A successful business development & advertising manager will be organized, disciplined and a self-starter willing to take the initiative to establish and execute advertising and funding strategies. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of success in a consultative sales environment and producing and presenting compelling proposals. Additionally, the ideal candidate has a strong ability to engage members of San Antonio’s business and leadership community on the importance and relevance of the San Antonio Report and why it deserves support in fulfilling its mission and continuing to grow. The ideal candidate will be results-oriented, comfortable using and interpreting analytics tools and comfortable working independently as well as in a collaborative team environment. This individual should have a strong interest in San Antonio and independent, nonprofit journalism. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify, prospect and secure advertising contracts to meet monthly, quarterly and annual revenue goals 
  • Manage the Report’s advertising program, including but not limited to: scheduling all ad units for publication, regularly producing ad analytics reports for all advertisers, overseeing quality control of ads running on all channels, and managing invoicing and collection.
  • Provide monthly advertising reports to Publisher / CEO and COO to provide a snapshot of collected revenue, accounts receivable status, advertising contract analysis (including but not limited to lead source, industry, etc) to help inform program status and opportunities for growth.
  • Take a lead role in growing the Report’s business membership revenue and count and work closely with the COO and colleagues to identify, prospect and develop new business member relationships to meet monthly, quarterly and annual revenue goals.  
  • Manage the Report’s business membership program, including but not limited to: overseeing business member benefit fulfillment and coordinating with other team members when appropriate, managing a portfolio of business members, building relationships with business members, responding to customer service requests, bi-monthly reporting on status of membership program, and continuing to look for ways to improve the business member program and benefit offerings.
  • Oversee and execute the creation of marketing materials, media kits, advertising rate cards and business membership program collateral. 
  • Identify and create opportunities for cross channel promotion with other San Antonio-based organizations via media partnerships and other partnership possibilities.
  • Identify, build, and foster long-term relationships with advertisers and business members.
  • Provide support for San Antonio Report member and civic engagement events.
  • Collaborate with business team members in organizational marketing and advertising efforts.
  • Collaborate with other members of the business team to achieve organizational and revenue goals.
  • Participate in business team efforts to recruit, train and mentor interns.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & CORE COMPETENCIES

  • Proven experience in a sales role and adept at making sales and/or fundraising calls
  • Possess a strong understanding of and interest in digital media 
  • Experience working with databases, CRM systems and analytics tools. Familiarity with Google ads manager, Salesforce, Mailchimp, WordPress, Google Analytics/Parse.ly and other similar tools is preferred.
  • Innovative in developing and implementing new strategies and an orientation toward constant improvement
  • Willingness to take initiative and results oriented
  • Articulate, poised and socially comfortable in a variety of settings
  • Willingness to experiment with new approaches and flexible in implementing others’ ideas
  • Persuasive communicator and creative thinker
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative environment
  • Experience using design software is a plus.
     

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: A 4-year degree required; communications, marketing, fundraising or nonprofit administration/leadership concentration preferred. 

This is a full-time, exempt position and is based in San Antonio, TX. 

Compensation for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience and skill set. Some of the benefits employees enjoy are 20 days of personal time off, nine paid holidays, health benefits, a 401(k) plan, and paid parental leave.
