San José Spotlight, the city’s first nonprofit news organization dedicated to independent political and business reporting, is looking for an ambitious Washington freelance reporter who excels at breaking news, cultivating relationships with sources and telling unique enterprise stories with ties to San Jose, the San Francisco Bay Area’s largest city.
Our journalists cover politics, policy and government in the heart of Silicon Valley, an exciting market with no shortage of compelling stories that shape the national conversation. We are looking for a reporter who is flexible, with exceptional digital skills, including social media, and the ability to write compelling copy — quickly and accurately. The Washington contributor will follow Silicon Valley’s congressional delegation, writing short stories about policy, proposed legislation and new bills in addition to pitching, researching and writing longer enterprise pieces.
The ability to share stories via social media, live-tweet meetings or events, take photos and video is highly desirable, and we compensate freelancers for those additional duties.
Our mission is to change the face of local journalism by building a community-supported newsroom that ignites civic engagement, educates citizens and strengthens our democracy.
