EDITOR AND GENERAL MANAGER

We are looking for an experienced editorial leader to take this extraordinarily successful and unique media organization forward in a dynamic and challenging environment.  The ideal candidate will have significant experience in a news-editorial leadership position; experience in working with or in a university or non-profit organization; an appreciation for innovative solutions to growing revenue without compromising journalistic integrity; a talent for collaboration and collegiality, and a dynamic personality able to energize a staff of talented media professionals and expand our network of university members and funders.  The successful candidate must locate in the Boston area.

The Conversation US (TCUS) is an independent, non-profit media organization established in 2014 that publishes news analysis and commentary written by academics, edited by journalists, and aimed at the general public.  We are part of a global organization with counterparts in such countries as Australia, the United Kingdom and France.  Support for The Conversation comes from member universities, foundations and individual donors who support this unique form of trustworthy, evidence-based journalism.

Our team of professional editors works with scholars from universities across the US to help them share their research and apply their expertise to topical issues. All our content is published under a Creative Commons license, which means we promote the free republication of our articles to other media organizations.  Time, Scientific American, Quartz, The Washington Post and Vice news are among our regular re-publishers.  Our copy is distributed by the AP and reaches all 50 states and news markets from Portland to Punxsutawney.

Our mission is to produce and disseminate evidence-based information, and to strengthen journalism by unlocking the rich diversity of academic research for audiences across America.  This mission is supported by our development team which fosters collaborations with universities and colleges, attracts funding from foundations and philanthropists, and identifies new revenue opportunities that align with the mission.

EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Editor and General Manager will lead The Conversation US news and development teams.  She or he will be responsible to the Board of Directors for publishing high quality, impactful and engaging journalism produced by a collaboration between our editors and academic experts on a daily basis.  She or he also will be responsible for working with the development staff to ensure that the organization’s financial well-being is not only sustained, but is strengthened.  This includes working in close collaboration with the Chief Innovation and Development Officer in maintaining strong relationships with our funders and publishing partners; finding new financial backers, and leveraging The Conversation’s reputation in innovative ways that extend its journalistic reach without compromising its integrity or mission.   A network of academic contacts and knowledge of international affairs would be a plus.

The Conversation US welcomes, respects and values people across all aspects of human identity.  We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.  Applicants must have authorization to legally work in the United States.

If you have a passion for collaborating with scholars to bring impactful, trustworthy journalism to the public, and would like to be part of an online publication that is making a real difference, we want to hear from you.  We will receive applications until the position is filled.
