Executive Assistant / Office Manager

This full-time position entails supporting two busy executive-level editors and a team of 11 reporters, assisting readers and members with administrative needs and helping manage a virtual office in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. It is primarily a work-from-home opportunity with occasional team meetings and on-site duties at events. Most communication occurs via email, messaging apps, phone and Zoom.

The Nevada Independent is a nonprofit news organization founded in 2017 by veteran political journalist Jon Ralston. We are Nevada’s only statewide, nonpartisan, nonprofit news team. Our mission is to deliver high-quality, in-depth journalism and opinion content on the matters that mean the most to Nevadans—and to hold government and public officials accountable. We aim to educate our diverse set of readers, while encouraging them to engage with our content, in order to elevate and broaden the scope of civic debate.

Ability to perform well under the pressure of deadlines
Ability to understand priorities and consistently adhere to them from day to day 
Ability to work independently while keeping the lines of communication open
Mastery of the English language, proper syntax and grammar (a writing test and proofreading test will be administered during the interview process)
A strong commitment to precision and accuracy
Good typing skills
Ability to interface professionally via email and phone with a variety of parties 
Familiarity with or willingness to be trained on:
MS Word/Google Docs, MS Excel/Google Sheets


Monitor and reply to emails that come in to the company’s admin/general Inbox
Assist the editors with reminders, calendar management and scheduling meetings
Perform a variety of online administrative tasks on a variety of systems and platforms
Help with website page edits and updates
Assist with proofreading stories and documents
Assist with assembly of our daily morning newsletter
Open and process company mail
Keep hard copy and electronic files up to date
Deposit mailed checks at bank as needed; log member and donor checks in SalesForce
Assist members with changes to recurring donations
Assist with basic member database upkeep
Serve as a coordinator between the company and outside vendors and consultants
Respond to swag order questions and issues, print labels and ship certain items
Coordinate with advertisers; manage ad requests, our ad calendar and ad placement
Reply to inquiries about and process invoices for ads and event sponsorships
Track donor pledges and process invoices monthly
Assist with basic bookkeeping tasks and some basic financial reporting
Assist with on-boarding employees, interns and freelancers
Track PTO for staff
Assist with payroll every two weeks
Coordinate with graphic designers and our print shop as needed
Assist managing editor with preparation for quarterly board meetings
Assist with or manage special projects as needed
Assist with grant tracking and administration


$50,000 to $65,000, depending on experience and skill set


Full health care, vision and dental insurance with no monthly premiums. Plan copays range from $25 to $50.
