We’re looking for a General Assignment reporter to join The New Food Economy’s award-winning newsroom. Working with us in our New York City office, you’ll dive deep into the details of a study on food waste’s biggest misconceptions one day and write a quick hit on a court ruling in South Dakota the next. We’re looking for a jack-of-all-trades: a tenacious reporter with good news instincts and judgment, a flair for storytelling, who can help out with social media and production when necessary, and who enjoys working as part of a small, tightly knit team. The ideal candidate has a keen eye for interesting angles, obsesses over the forces shaping the world we live in, thrives in a collaborative environment, and the ability to find big ideas in the rarefied world of food production and policy. (Disclaimer: This job doesn’t involve reviewing restaurants, chasing Instagrammable ice cream cones, or petting many farm animals. Unless that’s part of a deeper story!)
We don’t have to tell you: A lot of “writing” jobs in digital media are more about aggregation and trend-chasing than actual writing. This one isn’t like that. It’s an opportunity to contribute original reporting and help build a groundbreaking publication with a unique role in food media, as well as develop your voice, personality, and beat as a writer.
Scour the world of food for fresh-breaking stories, compelling characters, newsmaking developments, and big ideas
Cover a wide range of food-related industries and themes
Pitch and write a mix of daily news stories and longer features
Collaborate with the rest of the team on headlining and social media promotion
Some light additional production work in WordPress, Mailchimp, Buffer, and/or Infogram
1 – 3 years reporting experience
A history of food writing is nice, but reporting chops and intellectual curiosity matter far more
Be able to file taut, thoroughly reported copy on tight turnaround—bonus points if you can snap good photos while you’re at it
Familiarity with producing in WordPress CMS a plus
Must enjoy working in a small, closely-knit team where everyone wears a lot of hats
Equally comfortable writing a quick turnaround 500-word news bit and a reported feature
Flexibility to attend nighttime food events a plus, as is occasional travel for reporting
A sense of humor, appreciation for irony, and diverse interests
