Reporting to the Executive Director and collaborating with board members, the Audience and Engagement Manager is a key member of the senior leadership team, involved in all strategic planning and decision-making. In partnership with the executive leadership staff, the Audience and Engagement Manager is responsible for developing effective, enduring partnerships and implementing a sustainability-centered engagement strategy that will allow our newsroom to thrive.

Many of these stories come directly from our writing seminars, all-expenses-paid workshops centered around community building and training the next generation of war writers. NEWSROOM: In order for our War Horse Fellows stories to reach the broadest audience, The War Horse publishes in-depth reporting. Our investigative and multimedia reporting has been awarded for excellence and has led to changes in military and federal law. Our future Audience and Engagement Manager will be deeply committed to building a sustainable nonprofit newsroom that shines a light on abuses of power and betrayals of public trust — and sticks with those issues as long as it takes to hold power to account.
It is expected that The War Horse audience will increase and diversify in the coming years. The Audience and Engagement Manager will design and implement a comprehensive plan to build on The War Horse’s strong audience base to develop new strategies and relationships that increase our visibility, impact, and long-term sustainability. The Audience and Engagement Manager must have a proven track record of taking a creative, entrepreneurial and institution-building approach to their work.
The War Horse seeks an accomplished audience development expert to help us understand our readership, attract new audiences and deepen our engagement with them. This person will serve as the lead for audience development and community engagement at The War Horse, with a dual report to the executive director and managing editor, with close ties to the newsroom and a direct influence on the newsroom’s editorial calendar.
Develop a strategic vision for The War Horse’s audience growth across channels in support of broader business and journalistic goals. Launch studies of the audience, develop analytics and define goals to help us understand and expand our readership, help our journalism have greater impact and meet our revenue goals for membership.
Work closely with the managing editor to forge editorial partnerships that ensure maximum visibility for our journalism in the places where it can make an impact. Collaborate with newsroom editors and reporters to establish best practices in the newsroom for audience cultivation and engagement.
Lead the design and scaling of The Debrief: Your Guide to Defense and Veterans Affairs. Since 2016, The War Horse has been curating some of the best news and research about military and veterans affairs from around the web. The Debrief will be a searchable repository of the most authoritative sources on the topics, people and events that shape the conversation about military service, war, and its impact. This effort will integrate multiple technologies and serve as the nucleus of future crowdsourcing and data efforts.
Oversee the work of our growing engagement team and work with the newsroom’s team to maximize search engine optimization; track real-time and overall traffic patterns; drive testing and experimentation in collaboration. Present key digital insights to The War Horse’s board of directors, and assist in fundraising where appropriate.
Working with the leadership team, the audience strategist will work to consolidate and analyze the array of audience metrics via our various web and social media platforms; assists with overall goal-setting for the organization, including the internal and external key performance indicators for traffic, loyalty, engagement and membership. Responsible for evaluating and reporting internal editorial KPIs.
THE AUDIENCE AND ENGAGEMENT MANAGER’S IMPACT WILL BE MEASURED BY:
- The execution and strategy of operations including goal-setting, distribution tactics, and newsletter, social media, SEO, and community engagement efforts.
- Aptitude for securing syndication opportunities and forging publication partnerships with local and regional newsrooms.
- The ability to retain, upgrade, and expand a quality pool of loyal readers. Must possess the ability and creativity to implement new engagement streams, grow and improve existing channels, and manage multiple projects.
- A commitment to ensuring quality and cost-effectiveness in all advertising and engagement activities and materials and grow and manage a team which will do the same.
- Excellent communication skills are required, both written and oral with an innate ability to influence and engage a wide range of readers and build genuine, long-term relationships based on a passion for our mission, and implement annual strategic engagement plans and multi-year campaigns.
Candidates should have significant experience in forging partnerships, generating audience analytics and developing audience strategies, with specific expertise in tools for audience insights. They should be skilled in search engine optimization and be able to train and work with newsroom teams on product development, particularly email newsletters. They should also understand user experience and personal development. Experience generating revenue for newsrooms is highly valuable. Must be high energy and creative with impeccable attention to detail. Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
This position is part time offering 20hrs/wk with the potential for increased responsibilities as the organization grows. The position offers a rate of $25/hr with a generous PTO policy and an incredible opportunity for personal and professional growth among our growing newsroom team.
