Who you are:

The News Editor will assign and edit daily news stories for our YR Media platforms, as well as being a contributing news writer and reporter.Strong candidates for this role must not only have excellent journalistic instincts but also the ability to sharpen a story angle and help writers achieve the signature YR Media tone – authentic, bold, and conversational.Ability to work at a fast pace, oversee daily publishing of news content across our platforms and work on deadline with writers from across the country.

You will:

Work closely with editors and producers as well as contributing reporters and artists from around the country to create original and dynamic digital-first content that’s visually compelling and shareable.
Assign stories and acts as mentor to correspondents for successful coverage.
Use stellar copyediting and news writing skills, edits news stories and social copy in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Collaborate with news editors and contributors to generate ideas for stories and content, using best practices for building audience and engagement.
In addition to these responsibilities, performs other activities as assigned and required.

You should have:

3-5 years of editorial experience in a multimedia news environment
Ability to manage schedules and budgets, with a proven track-record from a publication that works with a variety of content and editorial formats
Strong knowledge of AP Style copy editing guidelines
Impeccable fact-checking
Ability to consistently meet deadlines and lead projects using strong analytic, strategic problem-solving and decision-making skills
Basic understanding of data and traffic metrics, as well as best practices for building audience and engagement
A demonstrated capacity to develop and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and organizations reflecting a broad range of identities, perspectives, and experiences
A passion and excitement for working with contributors ages 16-28
Ability to consider multiple perspectives
Strong interest in being part of a growing enterprise of community-based journalists from around the country
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrated experience coordinating with colleagues to achieve desired outcomes, and tracking and reporting on progress to senior managers
Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university, or relevant professional experience
Supervisory

This position will supervise editors and reporters.

Work Environment

This is a full time, exempt position. Approximately 90% of time spent on the job involves use of a monitor; therefore, must be able to sit for extended periods and to utilize standard ergonomics practices. Primarily works in an office environment, requiring the following activity: lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 10 pounds, kneeling, bending. Must be able to use standard office equipment.
