Collaborating with Smithsonian’s rural initiatives

April 29 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

The Smithsonian is expanding its engagement with rural communities across the country, and leaders from the Institute for Nonprofit News’ Rural News Network are invited to learn how rural newsrooms can be part of that effort.

In this introductory session, Smithsonian staff will share how the institution is working with rural partners through its Rural Initiative and preview opportunities connected to Our Shared Future: 250, a nationwide effort leading up to the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026. The initiative invites communities across the country to reflect on their histories, highlight local voices and help shape the nation’s shared future.

This conversation will explore how rural journalists and community-rooted newsrooms can collaborate with the Smithsonian Institution—from connecting with local museums and cultural organizations to elevating rural stories, history and perspectives within a national moment of reflection.

Rural newsroom leaders will have the chance to learn more about the Smithsonian’s rural engagement work, ask questions and discuss potential ways their reporting and community relationships could intersect with these efforts.
