Our Work
INN exists to build and support a network of independent, nonprofit news organizations that deliver vital news and information to communities across North America.
Why does it matter for people to have access to trusted sources of news? At the local level, research shows that when residents follow local news sources closely, they are more likely to vote in local elections, to vote across party lines and to feel attached to their communities. At the state and national level, investigative reporting holds those in power to account, often helping to correct imbalance and injustice. For complex issues like medical science, the environment, education and immigration, deep coverage is instrumental in building the public’s understanding of current problems and potential solutions.
To keep this news and information flowing, INN strengthens our network in a number of ways, including:
- Setting standards for editorial and operational independence, original news reporting and financial transparency.
- Developing programs that drive revenue and direct audience for our member organizations.
- Curating legal, business and technology resources that enable members to operate effectively and securely.
- Connecting newsroom leaders to share best practices and innovations.
- Fostering public appreciation of the value of independent news and press freedom.
- Conducting original research to identify trends, needs and opportunities for the field.
