Job Description: Senior Editor/Co-director – PT [Preferred start: 6/23/25]
 
CivicStory is a nonprofit news site that produces multimedia content about ecology, civics, and creative change in New Jersey and beyond. Our mission is    2-pronged: to advance solutions-based news about restoring ecosystems and strengthening our democracy, and to amplify the role of news in empowering citizens. The Senior Editor/Co-director will build on CivicStory’s core values and provide visionary leadership that enables the organization to broaden its reach and impact.

Position Overview
The Senior Editor/Co-director (estimated: 18-20 hrs/wk) calls for a humanities-oriented journalist with superior writing, editing, interpersonal, and organizational skills to lead the next phase of CivicStory’s growth. The SE will set a publication schedule and manage digital content, assign stories, and build relationships with freelance contributors, editors and diverse audiences in the New Jersey region. The successful candidate is flexible, forward-thinking, and passionate about words and ideas that engage a diverse citizenry. The Senior Editor/Co-director will both consult regularly with the Development Co-director (to join in  Sept. 2025), and report directly to the Board.

  
Responsibilities:
●      Develop and refine CivicStory’s editorial identity in view of evolving societal needs
●      Create, assign and schedule content for the news site and bi-weekly news updates
●      With our small staff team, develop audiences both in-person and digitally
●      Build relationships with news editors, journalism schools, and community partners
●      Oversee CivicStory’s Ecology-Civics Reporting Fellowship (Feb-May 2026)
●      Provide input on upgrades of CivicStory.org & SRhub.org and develop creative approaches to content curation

Qualifications:
●      Excellent writing and analytical capabilities
●      Technical proficiency across multiple web publishing platforms
●      Experience managing social media accounts
●      Strong collaborative and organizational skills
●      2-3 years of professional journalism and/or editing experience
●      Passion for empowering and engaging citizens of a diverse set of cultures and backgrounds
●      Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
●      Residency in or near New Jersey
●      Good to have: Foreign language proficiency
 
Availability:
 
●      Preferred Start: June 23, 2025
●      Flexible schedule; mostly remote; residence and/or regular presence in New Jersey  
●      Report directly to the Board, and attend monthly board meetings via Zoom
●      Compensation: $3,600/month; 3+ days/week; work may expand as funds materialize
●      Attend INN, Lenfest, and CCM meetings and other professional forums via zoom or in-person
