PublicSource is a nonprofit news outlet in Pittsburgh. We write stories with powerful narratives and characters, often beautifully illustrated and supported by data visualization, to explain complex issues in the areas of local government, economic development, education, health, the environment and climate, and gender and identity. PublicSource is seeking an operations and membership coordinator who will join our team to play a pivotal role in development, operations and audience growth functions. The role will provide exposure to several types of work across a nonprofit journalism organization. 

The operations and membership coordinator will: 

  • Process and acknowledge donations and fulfill thank you gifts.
  • Assist donors with questions about donations.
  • Distribute fundraising solicitations as assigned using Mailchimp, social media, email and physical mail.
  • Contribute to fundraising content design and strategy.
  • Receive, process, direct and respond to physical mail, email, and phone calls for the organization.
  • Support organizational leadership on project execution to grow email subscribers and the PublicSource audience in general.
  • Participate in event planning and attend occasional events as needed. This may include events hosted by PublicSource or representing PublicSource at community events.
  • Support the creation of internal and external communications about PublicSource.
  • Support the organization’s leadership as directed including during monthly financial processes.

We’re looking for an operations and membership coordinator who is: 

  • Interested in building a strong foundation across several areas of nonprofit journalism management, potentially specializing in one or more areas in the future.
  • Curious, proactive and asks questions.
  • A proficient communicator.
  • Comfortable working with data and willing to learn different tools to pull reports and draw conclusions.
  • Able to identify trends and bring a willingness to problem-solve.
  • Comfortable communicating with the public.
  • Empathetic and represents PublicSource with integrity.
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively.

3-5 years of experience with journalism, nonprofits or fundraising is helpful but not necessary. Familiarity with Salesforce (or other CRM), Google Office Suite, Google Analytics, Slack, Mailchimp and/or Canva is helpful. 

The salary range for the position is $45,000-$47,000 per year.

We operate as a hybrid newsroom, between our office in Pittsburgh’s Uptown neighborhood and virtual. Candidates need to be located in the Pittsburgh area. We encourage candidates of underrepresented backgrounds to apply.
