More about the Index dataset:
INN Index data allows for year-over-year comparisons. We ask a core set of Index survey questions each year, focused on revenue (foundation funding, individual giving, earned revenue), staffing size and roles, audience and distribution stats, and the missions and priorities of each outlet.
INN Index data goes deep. Every year we also add in a new module of questions that explore an important area for nonprofit news. For example, in CY2022 (and every three years) we added several additional questions focused on diversity, equity and inclusion. For the CY2023 cycle, audience and distribution was our bonus module. See here for the latest Index survey, capturing performance in CY2023.
INN Index data is clean and high quality. Our team spends more than two months checking, cleaning and organizing the incoming Index survey data, ensuring survey questions are answered correctly by each respondent.
Please note: Index data is confidential and requires the consent of individual news outlets before we can share outlet-level data.
